Classic PTSD occurs after a singular event: assault, accident, natural disaster. Complex PTSD, on the other hand, results from prolonged or repeated exposure to trauma, such as domestic violence, childhood abuse, or captivity.
What differentiates complex PTSD are three additional symptoms: severe emotional regulation difficulties, a persistent negative perception of oneself, and profound difficulties in interpersonal relationships. These profiles can be found in individuals who sometimes seek help years after the events, without having identified the connection to their history.

To escape these intrusions, the person implements avoidance strategies. They steer clear of places associated with the event, refuse to talk about it, and limit their outings. This gradual restriction of their living space can lead to marked social isolation, sometimes mistaken for depression.
Constant Hypervigilance
The nervous system remains on alert as if the threat persists. This manifests as sleep disturbances, increased irritability, difficulties concentrating, and exaggerated startle responses. This constant tension physically and mentally exhausts the individual.

PTSD is often associated with exceptional events. Public discourse speaks of attacks, wars, disasters. What is less recognized is the reality of repeated professional exposures that generate PTSD.
Healthcare workers confronted with death or violence, law enforcement, firefighters, and social workers exposed to recurring traumatic narratives: these populations develop forms of PTSD not linked to a single event, but to an accumulation. This mechanism is consistent with the category of complex PTSD described in the ICD-11.
The difficulty is that these professionals often normalize their symptoms. Hypervigilance is seen as rigor, sleep disturbances as a normal consequence of shift work, irritability as fatigue. The diagnosis comes late, sometimes after a prolonged work stoppage or a professional break.
Recognition of PTSD as a workplace health issue is progressing, but feedback on this point varies across sectors and existing prevention structures.
Treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Two psychotherapeutic approaches have the broadest validation corpus for treating PTSD:
- Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which works on thoughts and behaviors related to the event through structured exercises

This protective factor remains one of the most accessible, well before any clinical intervention. Consulting early, even in the absence of clear symptoms, remains the most pragmatic recommendation to prevent the disorder from becoming chronic.
